At the Internationally known Red Dot Design Awards, two of Lava’s projects have been awarded. The identity for De Balie and NL-RUHR were both acknowledged in the category 'communication design'. With over 12.000 submissions from more than 60 different countries, the ‘Red Dot’ is the largest and most renowned design competition in the world.
De Balie is a centre for cultural and political activities in Amsterdam for which Lava created a new identity. The dynamic monthly program has a wide variety of activities, with little or no images available. Inspired by political manifests, unique underlines were created for each item. From then on, the visual history of the program was growing, with more than 400 unique underlines within a year's time. The identity has won also a Gold Award at the European Design Awards earlier this year.
NL-RUHR is the brand name for all Dutch activities in Ruhrgebied Cultural Capital of Europe 2010. During this year, RUHR 2010, over 300 Dutch activities en events will take place. Commisioned by the Consul Düsseldorf, Lava came up with the name and designed a logo based on the well-known Dutch license plate, referring to the Dutch tourists, which cross the Ruhr area every year. A typeface was especially designed based on the area's industrial heritage, giving the identity a unique cultural language. The license plate yellow and the typeface were easy to adopt elements for the almost 300 Dutch activities involved within the organization.
Red Dot is the second competition awarding Lava as a winner during the year of her 20th birthday. Lava was awarded 'European Design Agency of the Year' at the European Design Awards earlier this year.
